Weather-Related Closures:

Our goal at Raindrops is to foster a healthy relationship between our students and the natural world. This is why so much attention has been placed on gear to help your children thrive at school. We do not want to cause any undue stress or discomfort as this would work against our core values. Physical safety and care are placed first and foremost to ensure the children are comfortable and able to learn. When children are physically uncomfortable it is very hard for them to access their higher level thinking as they are likely operating from their “fight or flight” mode. When one child is uncomfortable and or underdressed, we will likely have parents either bring more clothing or send the child home depending on what time it is. If half the class is struggling due to cold and wet, we will cancel class. We want children to have positive and healthy memories of their time in nature.

In order to keep you and your children safe, I have these policies in place for weather.

When local school districts cancel due to extreme/inclement weather, Raindrops will also be canceled.

Potential reasons for school closures include but are not limited to, wind storms, below freezing temperatures, unsafe air quality, pandemic related quarantine, etc.

  • If extreme weather that leads to inclement weather begins while class is in session, an early dismissal will be called and all students will need to be picked up immediately. This includes but is not limited to icy weather, freezing temperatures, and wind storms.

  • We will cancel/ have early dismissal if wind gusts above 25 mph are predicted to be sustained for more than an hour OR we are under a wind advisory. Nature classes are in danger of falling trees or branches.

  • We will cancel or shorten the day due to unsafe smokey air conditions (AQI 100 or higher).

  • We will close due to freezing temperatures: anything below 20 degrees including if the wind chill is below 20 degrees.

  • We will cancel class immediately following the sight of lighting to ground and or if thunder is heard.

  • We will cancel or shorten the day in freezing cold weather with sustained heavy rain. Hypothermia is a real risk during these conditions.
